On Tuesday May 13, CBC held a public forum with mayoral candidates, Dennis O'Keefe and Marie White.
This was a rather tame affair with nothing too provocative or controversial. Both candidates are appealing to voters on their leadership style. On the issues, they tend to agree with each other.
Subjects covered included street cleaning, downtown building heights, leadership style, environmental issues, bike paths, amalgamation, sidewalk clearance and road repairs.
For me, Marie White seemed the better prepared candidate and in fact, I thought she was the current councillor rather than Dennis O'Keefe. White had data at the ready and was able to present facts to the assembled crowd of approximatley 100. It was obvious that White has researched the issues and made herself informed.
Perhaps O'Keefe was trusting his memory and current experience and as the percieved front-runner, playing it safe.
One notable difference of opinion was the issue of building heights downtown. When questioned as to whether they would approve a building that exceeded city regulations, White gave a definitive "No". O'Keefe said he would consider the proposal and if he felt it benefitted the city, would approve a height exemption.
Did this debate sway any minds? I don't think so.
Election day is June 3. Ballots should be in your mailbox early next week.
Remember to vote!!
