It is interesting what Gerry Smith, chairperson of St. John's Sports & Entertainment (SJSE), had to say on the activities at the city's convention centre for the year 2009.
He is quoted in The Telegram (11/11/08) that, despite a forecast loss of approximately $120,000, he is expecting 2009 to be the busiest year ever for the centre. This caught me by surprise. For the financial year ending May 2008, the convention centre had a loss of $63,212. In fact, the 2009 forecast loss is the worse since 2004 when a loss of $181,023 was declared.
So, if the convention centre is about to embark on its "busiest year ever", why is it incurring such a loss? Does this mean we are going to be faced with larger losses the busier the convention centre gets? I hope not. Or does this indicate something is amiss with the centre and it is not suitable for the convention marketplace?
An explanation is required from Smith or deputy mayor Ron Ellsworth, who sits on the board of SJSE, as our representative.
